Knowledge-based Locomotive Planning for the Swedish Railway

Knowledge-based Locomotive Planning for the Swedish Railway

The link above is the master thesis of Dr. Volker Scholz written in 1998. It discusses the knowledge-based approach for locomotive planning. The algorithms could be adopted and applied to logistic planning in general.

Drools Solver and the upcoming Drools Fusion are well suited for this problem domain.

  1. This is definitely food for drools-solver.

It looks like he's using a deterministic assignment algorithm, which would be a good starting solution for Drools Solver's tabu search.

In my experiments I 've seen the best results by using a deterministic filler algorithm (See the interface StartingSolutionInitializer), before grinding it through tabu search, which improves upon the solution found by the first.
